Tips to Stay Healthy

In the last few weeks, it seems like everyday,  I am hearing about some virus or bug going around.  This year seems to be one of the worst in recent memory.  I understand that Doctor’s offices are inundated with calls from patients with similar symptoms needing to be seen.  I thought it would be a good time to share some tips to avoid getting what is coming down the pike and practical, easy steps to remain healthy now and in the future.

1. Get plenty of rest
At least seven to eight hours is preferred, and proper sleep patterns help to contribute to a strong defense system.

2. Move
Moderate exercise helps with proper elimination to assist the body in its ability to rid itself of toxins and waste.

3. Whole Foods Diet
Eating raw foods and decreasing your intake of processed foods gives the body the means to produce the necessary fighter cells (t-cells and white blood cells) to keep invaders out.

4. Decrease Sugar Intake
Sugar decreases the immune system’s ability to work properly beginning as soon as 30 minutes of ingestion and up to five hours post ingestion.

5. Minimize/ Manage Stress
Stress suppresses the immune system and chronic stress seems to increase the likelihood of illness. Relaxation techniques, meditation and exercise are effective in decreasing the potential negative impact stress has on the body.

6. Avoid Excess Alcohol
More than two drinks daily on a consistent basis decreases the immune system’s ability to fight off infection.

7. Drink Water
Staying adequately hydrated helps the body flush out toxins and assists with both digestion and elimination.

8. Eat Antioxidant Rich Foods
Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables as well as glutathione, which is found in avocado, asparagus and whey protein empowers your immune system by helping to prevent the damage free radicals can cause as well as DNA synthesis and repair.

9. Vitamin D levels
Adequate levels of Vitamin D help us to fight infection and many Americans are deficient and don’t know it. A simple blood test can detect if you fall within healthy levels.

10. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Excess weight negatively affects the production of white blood cells and decreases your ability to fight off disease and infection.

Protect Your Back While Raking Leaves

Clearing your property of leaf debris is actually considered a moderate-level physical activity. It is an aerobic exercise that increases your heart rate while utilizing several muscle groups for twisting, bending, lifting, and reaching. This sudden demand on the heart and muscles can lead to a quick injury.

Potential injuries include muscle strains, spasms, injuries to back, shoulders and wrists, and even heart strain. Those most at risk are individuals with heart conditions, and those that are physically unfit due to sedentary lives.

Raking autumn leaves

Most injuries can be avoided by following these tips:

  • rakes leaves when they are dry, not wet
  • pace yourself, dividing the project into reasonable sections
  • take frequent breaks to do some light stretches and drink fluids
  • when bagging leaves, always lift with your legs – not your back

Equally important, be sure to maintain a healthy posture while raking:

  • form a wide base with your feet
  • keep your back naturally aligned, standing as straight as you can comfortably
  • move your whole body as you draw the rake towards you, careful not to twist your spine
  • position your hands apart for increased leverage
  • switch sides every few minutes to balance the distribution of demand on your muscles

Once you finish raking, do some simple stretches and drink more fluids. A warm bath can do wonders for sore muscles.

Oops! Did you get hurt? Remember that your chiropractor can help you.
